Middle dot or multiplication dot?

Use the middle dot (·, U+00B7) between words or short labels. For a mathematical dot operator, choose ⋅ (U+22C5). They are separate characters, even when a font makes them look alike. A search, parser, or equation editor can treat them differently.

Choose a dot by purpose

For a profile or navigation label, a middle dot with a space on each side is easy to read. For a written checklist, choose a bullet. The black and white circles are larger geometric shapes; if you use them for status, include a word such as Available so the meaning does not depend on shape alone.

Paste a dot on your phone or computer

Tap a symbol button, switch to the destination app, and use Paste. On a phone, touch and hold in an editable field to find Paste. If clipboard access is blocked, select the character shown on this page and copy it using your device’s menu. The destination font controls its size and vertical position.

Frequently asked questions

Which dot should I copy for multiplication?

Use ⋅, the Unicode dot operator U+22C5, when you need a mathematical multiplication dot. It is different from the middle dot · (U+00B7) and the list bullet • (U+2022).

Is a middle dot the same as a period?

No. The middle dot · is U+00B7 and normally sits near the middle of the line. A period . is U+002E and normally sits at the baseline.

Why does my copied dot look different?

The app or font you paste into controls the appearance. Copying preserves the Unicode character, but its weight, size, and alignment can change.
